Investing In Gold

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

A very diversified investment portfolio has a small space for a position in gold. Some people think that investing in gold means holding gold coins, usually South African Kruger Rands, which are one troy ounce in weight. Other speculators purchase gold futures on the commodity exchange.

However, futures contracts are extremely precarious because you are betting that the price of gold will rise or fall in the future. The contract itself takes a fairly small up front payment, but you will have to put up guarantees called margin to take care of daily changes in cost.

The reason investors are interested in gold at the moment is because often in the past, when the stock market is down, the gold market is up. Weakness in the dollar usually brings a rise in the price of gold too.

Another method of investing in gold is through bonds and precious metal funds, which can be bought through a stock broker. However, you will need to select your adviser very carefully, because this field of investing takes highly expert knowledge.

The following tips are meant as examples only as you will need up-to-the-minute information, if you are considering investing in stocks, shares and funds. One of the names that will come up in any search is Agnico-Eagle Mines, which trades on the NYSE and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker AEM. They have 30+ year history in the production of gold and In that time, they have produced 4,000,000+ ounces of gold.

Gold has made massive profits for investors in gold since the late 1970’s. However, the key to making profits from gold is knowledge of the different resistance points in the price and the evaluation of the global market for the use of gold. It is used primarily in jewellery and electronics and some other types of manufacturing.

The biggest markets for gold jewellery is India and other Eastern countries. China’s new-found prosperity is also having an effect on the markets, although manufacturing is still of prime significance there.

You will need a good stockbroker or adviser, because the gold market is so complex. If you are investing in gold as a hedge against a weak dollar, you are taking huge risks and you will need to watch for any strengthening in the dollar like a hawk. A pretty sensible tactic is to set yourself realistic goals. For example, are you content with a 10% profit or are you going to hang out for a 25% gain?

Gold can be affected by seasonal events. Check out when people in India get married. It is seasonal and around Christmas time. Then St. Valentine’s Day is a realistic influence too, but you or your adviser will have to examine the trends and the graphs.

You can get into gold mining stocks for quite small money, but it is not the price of the share certificate that is important, it is the yield on those shares. Be wary with small mining companies, because the expenses of exploration are ruinous. Likewise, profits on hitting a big seam would be wonderful for a small company.

Some Topics You Should Be Very Cautious About Raising Up

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Are you going out on your first date? Enjoy yourself. But then watch out so that you do not broach any unwanted or irrelevant subject that is a killjoy. Here are a few tips to help you stick to the right side of the conversation.

While on your outing, just enjoy the experience and use this opportunity to get to know the other person better. How you do this is by listening to the other person and talking only when required .

A conversation is not one sided. The other person would also be asking you questions about yourself. Do respond and talk about your self when asked and keep the conversation going. You should not be absent minded or somewhere lost in thought.

One doesn’t talk about topics like politics or crime on your first date. This is not done.

Of course you can talk about politics or any other subject if it so happens that both of you share the same common interest and then it helps you interact better and the conversation flows.

You will find that the conversation gets argumentative if both of you have diverse opinion while discussing politics. In such cases, the best would be to stop the conversation and change the subject.

Religion is something that people are very sensitive about and it is very personal to each individual. This is the second subject that you should avoid discussing on your first date.

Religion is a serious matter. Unless both of you know each other’s opinions and hold the same beliefs about this subject, it does not help to bring up this topic on your first date.

In case you do end up talking, it could get into an argument and build divides. Instead of spoiling your date, keep this discussion for the future until you get to know the other person better.

Will These Wine Glasses Do?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The growing trend of popularity of wine has led to a boom in things to go with wine like corkscrews, stoppers, coolers, napkins, pouring baskets, decanters, candles, thermometers, bottle jackets, hydrometers and dozens of variations of each accessory from electric versions to manual ones. Needless to say, a lot of these accessories will be used until the novelty wears off and then left at the back of the cupboard.

However, there is one category of wine drinking accessory that no wine drinker should be without and that is wine glasses. They are essential, I am sure that everyone would agree. But the good thing about wine glasses is that they are attractive when they are not in use too. A set of six lead crystal wine glasses is a fine-looking sight. And a fine set of glasses correctly shaped for the wine you are drinking will greatly enhance your enjoyment of that wine.

This is because the shape of the glass is very influential on the drinker’s ability to savour the taste and the aroma of wine. Therefore, it is essential to use the correct glasses for the type of wine being served.

Red wines benefit a lot from contact with air, so, aside from opening the bottle an hour before drinking it, you could decant it. The older and heavier the wine, the more air it needs. The next step is to serve the red wine in large glasses. This is not so as to be able to get as much wine in there as possible! A full, normal size bottle contains six servings no matter what glass you use, but a large glass allows you to swirl the wine around the glass, thereby increasing its contact with air.

A large tulip shaped glass is a good example of this kind of wine glass and any dark red wine would benefit from being drunk out of such a vessel. Try a Rioja or Bordeaux, for instance.

White wines, on the other hand, do not need to breathe for as long as red wines and are best served slightly chilled. Therefore, the wine glasses tend to have a smaller bowl and a longer stem. The bowl is smaller, because swirling is not essential and the stem is longer, so that the warmth from your hand does not warm the wine up prematurely. Try a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon or a German wine in these glasses.

Champagne glasses are called champagne flutes because the bowl is long and narrow, which allows the bubbles to float through more of the wine than if the bowl were short. This is beneficial for the wine, the taste and its appearance. The stem is also long as with other white wines to diminish heat transfer.

The last main kind of glass is the sherry schooner, which is also used for port. Sherry and port are both heavy reds and so need to breathe, which is one of the reasons why they ought to be decanted. However, a schooner has hardly any stem, because the warmth from your hand is required to keep the wine at the right temperature.

Besides the shape of the bowl and the length of the stem, the next most significant factor is the quality of the glass and its design. Some people like hand-blown glass and it can be very beautiful, but it also tends to be light and fragile. I prefer to use lead crystal glasses, which are a lot heavier and can take a deeper pattern.

Certain Topics You Should Be Very Careful About Broaching

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Some conversation topics are suitable for first dates, but others could potentially destroy an otherwise fantastic evening. It is important to know what subjects are approachable and what subjects should be handled with care; if you want to have the opportunity to pursue a meaningful relationship with this person, you don’t want to mess up your first date by saying something you shouldn’t have. Here are three topics that you should be very careful when dealing with.

Try not to talk too much about yourself. It is the first date! Try to find out more about the other person. You will look arrogant and unattractive if you go on and on about yourself. Few things are worse than giving off the impression that you are pompous and cocky on a first date.

Now, of course, if you are asked a question concerning yourself, don’t be shifty and change the subject. Answer the question and then ask one of your own. This keeps the conversation flowing and prevents awkward pauses.

Topic number two: politics. Never talk politics on first date. As a matter of fact, politics should usually be avoided until later, once you’ve decided that you want to get serious with someone.

It happens to come up, and you find that both of you share political viewpoints, then feel free to get into it a little bit and use it as a platform to start another topic. But if you sense an argument approaching, slam the brakes and change directions.

At the slightest sign of an unpleasant reaction or response from your date, change the subject immediately.

The topic of religion tends to have the same rules as talking about politics. It generally isn’t something you want to discuss on a first date.

Unless you are both devout Christians or Muslims or some other religion and you know that you share the same opinion, quarantine the subject. Such heavy topics really shouldn’t be discussed on first dates anyway.

Differing religious views can make a date go downhill. Unless is extremely important for you to know someone’s religious viewpoints before getting involved with them, steer clear of this hazardous subject and save it for a later date.

Opinions On Religion And Politics

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

When you are at a party or a social event, we have been raised to believe that some subjects are taboo, such as religion and politics, as bringing them up as a topic of conversation will often start a lively debate, that could all to easily turn ugly.

Most people do not like to bring politics and religion into a conversation because they evoke such powerful emotions. As such, these topics are usually avoided in social situations.

Many people think that what they believe regarding religion and politics is the “right” belief and that there isn’t room for other views. Some people’s minds are closed to the possibility of differing ides. And there are wars that continue to rage over these topics.

Some people feel comfortable with their opinions and are threatened by opposing ideas. They shut out new ideas to protect themselves. Other ideas are not considered or considered and quickly rejected.

Politicians often have the same problems when discussing hot button issues. Many times differences in opinion lead to arguments and resolution is hard to achieve. Sometimes common ground is never found.

Judgment can at times be clouded by a staunch belief in any given thing, making it impossible to consider another angle. When in a political setting, there may be a large group of people who feel deeply and completely sure about their opinion on an issue.

By voting for political professionals who agree with your particular viewpoint, you can be reasonably sure that they will represent your beliefs when they consider laws and other political issues. This is probably the best way to voice your opinion on many topics.

You must vote in order to make sure that your voice is being heard.

Research the politicians that support as many of your views as possible. You may want to stump for them or volunteer for their campaign to ensure they are elected or stay in office. And if none of the politicians match your views fully then create your own campaign and get people to support you!

Black Hills Rings? What Are They?

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Most people have aspirations for the future. Some people plan out their lives in elaborate detail from an early age, while others just pray that their dreams will come true. I think that that depends on the attitude to life you have as much as your personality. I definitely remember that when I was a boy, some of the girls I knew were planning what they would do when they got married to so and so movie star.

They did not know anything about marriage or what being married was like, they were just role playing, but some of those dreams might have stuck.

None of the boys I knew thought about their future much at all. I did not either really although I knew that I wanted to go to university and travel after that. I studied French and German for three years and passed my exams.

After finishing university, I began working for an international firm and did some traveling. I have always liked jewellery although I do not wear a lot at the same time. I suppose I collect jewellery, but I like to wear it as well.

It was a custom of mine to buy a piece of jewellery wherever I went, if I saw something I liked and if I could afford it. Anyway, I met a young woman while I was in America and I told her about my craze for collecting jewellery and rings in particular. I showed her a couple of rings that I had taken with me. One was a ring with a Celtic Knot design and another was an Irish Claddagh ring.

Anyway, we got on well and so she offered to take me to a jewellers that she knew. We went to a small back street jeweller, who had a range of rings I had never heard of before. They were called Black Hills Gold Rings and they looked very special. They have quite a range, including a lot of the common designs, but they also have a few patterns that I had never seen before. I was hooked and wanted one.

My friend really fell for a women’s wedding set. She had seen it in the window for months, but did not have anyone to give it to her. The engagement ring had two leaves and a grape cluster with a small diamond nestled in the middle of it, while the wedding band had two additional leaves and a grape cluster. This meant that when worn together, the two rings would fit together to surround the diamond completely. It was really very nice.

I had to agree that it was very beautiful, but felt it necessary to point out that I had not known her long enough to propose. She was a good sort and did not feel offended. I bought a beautiful white gold ring with the Black Hills gold roses inlaid on the top two thirds of the band, leaving the underside of the ring plain. It was a gorgeous addition to my collection. As for my guide, well, she did not get a ring, but I took her for an expensive meal and she seemed happy enough with that.

How The Hebrew Language Was Restored

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Hebrew is the language of the children of Abraham, who sojourned in Egypt, were enslaved there, and who were led forth by Moses. They lived in Israel approximately 1700 years. The five books of Moses, called the Torah in Hebrew, or the Pentateuch in Greek, was written in Hebrew.

When the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the temple in 70 C.E., Hebrew ceased to be a spoken language. It did, however, survive, through the ongoing study of the Torah and use in prayers by religious Jews.

On of the early Zionists was Eliezer ben Yehudah (1858-1922), who is credited with the restoration of Hebrew as a modern language. When he moved to Jerusalem, Ben-Yehuda became a teacher at the Alliance School, and with his efforts, became the first institution where some courses were taught entirely in Hebrew.

As many young boys of that time period, he began learning Hebrew at a young age. He excelled in his studies, attended a Yeshiva (Talmud academy) in hope that he would become a Rabbi. However, he become interested in the secular world, and attended a Russian “gymnasium” and later the Sarbonne in Paris.

Ben-Yehuda created a three-part action plan: “Hebrew in the Home,” “Hebrew in the School,” and “Words, Words, Words.” Before he moved to Israel, he had successfully tried several lengthy conversations in Hebrew. He made the decision to speak only Hebrew with every Jew he met. Although he was able to speak Hebrew with little problem, he constantly had to come up with new words to describe everyday human activities.

When his son Itamar Ben-Avi was born in 1882, he made his wife Deborah agree to raise their son as the first all-Hebrew speaking child in modern history. Ben-Yehudah had to coin words for household objects that did not exist in Biblical or prayer-book Hebrew, such as: ice-cream, omelet, towel, and bicycle.

The resurrection of an ancient language to a modern society would only succeed if the younger generation would learn to speak Hebrew fluently. Upon moving to Israel, he started teaching at the Alliance Isralite Universelle School, where the children were from a variety of Jewish communities around the Europe and the mid-East, and thus Hebrew was their only common language. Ben-Yehudah began to use the “direct system” of learning Hebrew (this means teaching the HEbrew language without translations from other languages). After a short time, the students were able to chat with each other about daily topics.

Ben-Yehudah was always a prolific and dedicated writer, often writing for the local newspapers. Eventually, in order to teach adults, he founded his own newspaper, Hahavatzelet. Hebrew lacked many words such as telegram, subscriber, fashion and many others, so he was able to use his scientific study of linguistics to introduce new words.

As a revived language, Hebrew needed an academy and a dictionary in order to standardize the new words. Ben-Yehuda founded “Va’ad HaLashon”, the predecessor of the Hebrew Language Academy, and worked laboriously on his “Complete Dictionary of Ancient and Modern Hebrew.” He published the six volumes in 1910, but after his death, his second wife and son brought the work to an entire 17 volumes.

In 1922, the British mandate authorities recognized Hebrew as the official language of the Jews in Palestine. This culminated in his life=long dream being fulfilled, but one month later, he died from tuberculosis which had plagued him numerous years. This was the first time in all of human history where a language that had ceased to be spoken in ancient times, came back to life.

The Ancient History Of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Barry Castle belonged to William de Barri in the 12th. Century, but was destroyed by Llewellyn Bren in 1316. Some say it was later rebuilt and used by the Cavaliers only to be destroyed again by the Roundheads, never to be reconstructed.

The Normans were hated by the locals and they had to build large mansions to protect themselves from the frequent attacks carried out on them from the people of the valleys and mountains. During the time of Henry III, there were 12 castles within six miles of Barry. In Glamorgan, there were 30 castles and in south Wales as a whole, 150.

Porthkerry and its church which lies on the wooded hill to the west of it are said to have taken their name from Ceri, who, in turn, is said to have founded a port there, ie ‘Port Ceri’. People say that Ceri ap Caid, the King of Essyllwg, lived in Porthkerry before the Christian era and that his bard, Corvinor, was the first to build a ship with sails and a rudder for the ‘race of Cymru’. Some believe that Ceri was a nephew or grandson of Caractacus (Caradog) and that he took over the leadership of the government in South Wales when Caractacus had to journey to Rome.

John Wesley preached in the Porthkerry Church and sometimes outside in the churchyard too between 1741 and 1743. Today, there are two very old churches still in use in Barry: St. Cadocs Church in Cadoxton and Merthyr Dyfan Church in Merthyr Dyfan. One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Cadoxton was the largest village in the Barry area: thus, in 1844 the Parliamentary register contained 25 names: 20 from Cadoxton and five from Barry. The one church was dedicated to St. Cadoc, who had been accustomed to spend Lent on Flat Holm and Barry Island. The village (Cadoc’s Town)took its name from the church, which was founded in 800 AD.

Merthyr Dyfan Church, which is situated in the north of Barry, was founded in 600 AD and the name means Dyfan The Martyr. There were two saints of this name. The one travelled to Barry to convert the local people to Christianity and the other lived in the sixth century. He was the son of a Welsh chieftain. His sister was also martyred and the town of Merthyr Tydfil is named in her memory.

The Christian faith grew exponentially in the Vale of Glamorgan and in the middle of the 2nd. Century, Llewrwg, Prince of Siluria, became the first king, anywhere in the world of all time, to be baptized into the Christian faith. He sent to Rome for more Chritian teachers and was sent Dyfan and Fagan. The former was martyred near the site of the church and the latter was canonized. St. Fagan’s just outside Cardiff was named after him.

Gold Wedding Rings

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

The most frequently used element for wedding rings and engagement rings is gold. White gold is even more exclusive. Gold wedding rings look good whether the design is just a straightforward, basic band or an engraved band like a Celtic Knot. Gold rings can be given on other occasions too of course. Some people give their children a gold ring for their coming of age birthday.

Until not so long ago, it was customary for the man to give a gold ring when he asked for his girlfriend’s hand in matrimony. However, nowadays it is more usual for the couple to go shopping for the engagement or wedding ring together. This makes good sense, even if it is less romantic, because the wearer can get the design that she likes.

Gold symbolizes purity in many cultures and that is one of the reasons why it is given to brides and brides to be. The symbolism is all but lost though in today’s consumer society in the West. For many people though it still symbolizes the hope that they will stay true to each other, until the day they die. It is a way of showing that the wearer has taken vows and intends to keep them.

There is a huge variety of gold rings available. However, the variety lies not only in the design but also in the purity of the gold. Logically, the purer the gold, the more pricey it is. In the UK, most gold rings are either 9 or 18 carat. In the USA, most gold rings are 14 carat, but in Thailand, not many people would buy gold that is less than 18 carat and 22 carat is the norm for women. Pure gold is 24 carat, however pure gold is so malleable that you can mould it with your bare hands.

This might sound fine, but it is not. A 24 carat gold ring goes out of shape every few hours, just by you doing what you do every day and then it can pinch your skin. Opening a door can buckle the ring. This means that you can not set stones in pure gold, because they would soon fall out. Pure gold rings are best not even engraved because the design would soon rub off.

Therefore, the best place to begin, if you want a gold ring, is to think about what style you want. Do you want precious stones set into it? Then you should not really go above 18 carat. If you cannot afford 18 carat then 9 or 14 carat is for you. If you want something like a Celtic Knot ring, that is one with an engraved design, then anything up to 18 carat for you too, depending on your finances. If you want a pain band of gold, then a thick ring of 22 carat gold would be great, but not if you do a lot of labor-intensive work.

If you really want something special, why not have a gold ring crafted to your own design? It is not so expensive as you might think and you will end up with something unique, especially if you provide your own stone to be polished too. Such a gold ring would become a family heirloom and could stay in the family for generations.

The Ancient History Of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

In the 18th. Century evidence of Neolithic man was discovered in the form of dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with obscure markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads, amongst other things. Unfortunately, although these things reside safely in the Museum of Cardiff, no one thought it worth excavating at the time and now residences stand on the sites.

They also found an ancient Roman kitchen complete with utensils and food remains which appeared to have been abandoned in a hurry like the Marie Celeste. That wasn’t investigated either. In 1533, the King’s Antiquary, Leland, was told to tour all places where records were held. It took him nine years and his description of the island was as follows:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Vikings ravaged the coast of South Wales in the tenth century. They often took hostages from the monasteries, but they did not seem to want to live in the area. For a long tim, the island was known as the “Saints’ Retreat” or the “Island of Saints”. Afterwards, in the sixteenth century, it was inhabited by smugglers and pirates and was called the “Smugglers’ Fortress”. This became serious as it grew simultaneously with the rise of Bristol, Britain’s second largest port.

The island soon became the centre for smuggling and piracy in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, Barry Island became known as ‘The Fortress of Knight’. Kight was the most frequent and feared pirate in the channel but people were too afraid to speak out against him. He was also a local celebrity. His ship was armed and named ‘John O’ Combe’. The navy eventually routed him and he moved down to Lundy Island, which he also turned into a fortress. However, he and his successor, Arthur, went back to Barry so often that Customs requested the government to send a cutter to Penarth and 60 soldiers to Barry on permanent duty.

Rhoose was infamous for its wreckers and George II sent troops to break up the smugglers and wreckers. They landed at Aberthaw “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. Several large caves were filled in while constructing the present day docks and it is likely that they were used by the pirates until they were moved on in about 1850.
