The stories of his honesty followed him through his legal and political career.

Abe Lincoln seemed to live with bare necessities. “No man ever had fewer advantages than Abraham Lincoln. As a boy, he was the poorest of the poor. No rich friend held out a helping hand. But see what he had already accomplished by pluck, perseverance, and honesty! He was very awkward and far from handsome, but he was so modest, so unselfish and kind, that every one who knew him liked him. Let’s talk about politics in San Antonio. In case you didn’t know, San Antonio is the capital of Texas. Texas is one of the most favorable states for life in this country. Texas has been like this for years. People flock to Texas every year. Most come as tourists but some actually come to live here. San Antonio is the most attractive city in Texas. Millions of people visit it every year.

Has San Antonio been negatively affected by this current economic crisis? Well, not so much as it was anticipated. People were surprised because of this. Even during this crisis, it is one of the fastest growing major cities in the country. It still gets its fair share of new citizens. Well, many people came to live there even when there was no crisis. The great thing is that this number hasn’t decreased that much.

Why do people come here so much? Mostly because the city is very attractive and it offers jobs. The one thing people now need is jobs. San Antonio has this. There are many available jobs there. Plus, considering how fast its economy is growing, the number of available jobs will be growing with time. San Antonio is one of the most attractive cities in the country (for life).

Have the politics of San Antonio been successful? Yes, they have. They have brought many investors to the city. The investors have created more jobs for people. Since San Antonio is slowly breaking out from this recession, even more investors will come here. It will be a great opportunity to create even more jobs. This way, the economy will improve with time. This growing economy will attract more visitors and potential residents.

Still, we have to be patient. The recession hasn’t left San Antonio entirely. But, its effects might only be felt for a couple of more years. After that, the rise will continue and the economy will be growing even faster.

Shepherding. God is teaching me what it means to be a shepherd. I own Barbados Black Bellied Sheep. They know my voice on hearing and my appearance on sight. In fact, they have extremely keen eyesight. They watch me through the windows of my house from an acre away. They depend on me for their needs, and they let me know. For instance, they clearly signal me when it’s time to eat.

The sheep are also extremely timid. As a result, I must be careful to be very gentle around them. I do not startle my sheep. If startled, I have seen them jump a six-foot fence in a long glide like a gazelle. If they escape my fences, I would probably never get them back because of their shyness. No, I do not startle them, I’m always careful to speak softly to them and to protect them. God knows what it means to be a shepherd.

Jesus explains the meaning of a shepherding attitude. “I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down. I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy (I have named such sheep the butt heads). I will shepherd the flock with justice” (Ezk. 34:15-16 NIV).

Correction Before Judgment. Jesus shows this grace of shepherding when he tells us how we are to pastor the delinquent members of his flock in the church. “Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!” (James 2:12-13 NIV).

Amazingly, does not Shakespeare’s words parallel that last line? Let’s see if I can remember. PORTIA speaks in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, Act 4, scene 1, (1596). “The quality of mercy is not strain’d, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest; It blesseth him that gives and him that takes: ‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown….”

There are, at least, two steps of correction which must precede judgment, Jesus teaches. (I) “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. (II) “But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ (III) “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” In today’s poor supervision practices, I observe these first two steps are frequently ignored.

Notice, this last quote refers in context to discipline, not to doctrines. “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matt 18: 15-18 NIV). The instruction of Jesus works just as well in business management, political and legal authority, church discipline, or family headship.
