Will the Cuban Embargo make their Cigars Illegal Forever?

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

If you’ve ever wished you could pop open your humidor case and pull out a tasty Havana, you’re not alone. Cuban cigars are even clichd as a metaphor for the best of the best. If you’re wondering if this embargo will ever end, you’re also not alone. The cigars that come out of this nation are renowned around the world for being incredible. The term Hecho in en Cuba-Made in Cuba-hasn’t been seen in the US for many years.

This law dates to the 1960s. President John F. Kennedy and Cuba’s new dictator following the 1959 communist revolution, Fidel Castro, were famous for being antagonistic toward each other. In 1962, Kennedy imposed the embargo as a putative measure against the island. Cigars were seized and trade was closed off. The cigars, of course, are not only completely safe, they’re better than most others.

The escalation of hostilities between Castro and the US started quickly after the 1959 revolution. Castro seized all private property on the island, booted American business interests out and imposed an Eastern-bloc style dictatorship and command economy. To make things even hotter, he aligned himself with the USSR and railed against the excesses of the US in speeches. The final blow was when he decided to allow the USSR to locate missiles on his island. This came very close to leading to a global nuclear war between the USSR and US and the US subsequently tried, and failed, to assassinate Castro several times. They even tried poison cigars!

For many Cuban-American exiles and some other Americans, lifting the embargo would mean implicit acceptance of Cuba’s communist regime. Today’s college students may not have even lived during the Cold War, but the bitterness involved in this fight is still very much a heartfelt thing among many. The embargo has actually gone way beyond where most have ventured. A US citizen is technically committing a crime by buying a Cuban cigar in a foreign nation!

There are continually efforts being made to lift this embargo, but old wounds run deep and it’s more likely that marijuana may actually be legalized in the US before Cuban cigars are allowed back on the mainland. Despite the fact that Cuban cigars are the best in the world by most accounts, Americans cannot have them.

About World Famous Arturo Fuente Opus X Cigars

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

The World Famous Arturo Fuente Opus X Cigar is unique and prized in spite of its price. This is the first all Dominican cigar. The Fuente Opus X is complex flavored from beginning to end. The aromatics in each size are different, but they share their characteristic of superior quality. This brand has garnered top ratings from Industry publications. Top publications have given it a warm reception since introduction.

The family company of Arturo Fuente has been in business for 4 generations. Superior cigar making craftsmanship is part of the family heritage. The business was founded by the company namesake who belonged to a family in the tobacco and cigar making business in Cuba. He migrated to Florida following the termination of the Spanish American War. He established the first manufacturing enterprise in the historic Ybor City neighborhood of Tampa. Since then, the business moved to Latin America. It is presently based in the Dominican Republic.

The origination date of the seed that has since produced the Opus X tobacco is 1992. This date is celebrated by each box marked to memorialize the date. The Opus X was first sold 3 years later to a limited market. Boxes, have included Humidipaks since 2002. Water drop stickers indicate their presence. More than 700,000 carry this brand every year. Non regular production samples are also issued for the serious aficionados and collectors who are willing to pay the extra price.

In this finest line of the Fuente produce, the flavors are both unique and bold. This is not recommended by some smokers for smoking on an empty stomach. The cigars are wrapped in Rosado leaves grown in the Fuente plantation located in the Dominican Republic. The brand name is derived from the original Rosado leaf wrapper. Before the Opus X revealed otherwise, it was believed that a good cigar could not have a Dominican wrapper due to the difficulty in growing one. In addition to the Rosado, the claro, candela and maduro wrappers may also be used in the Opus X brand.

The process of making these great smokes begins after the harvest. The freshly picked green tobacco is hung in curing barns to allow for slow evaporation of moisture. After 6 weeks, the leaves gradually turn a rich shade of brown. These cured leaves are fermented and aged for years before they are considered ready for inclusion in the finest produce. Even though they are made with aged tobacco, they are aged again after they have been rolled. Generally, they are aged at least four months before they are released them from their aging room after rolling.

In the embryonic early stage the ultimate taste is still being developed. With aging comes a maturation process. The blend is a combination of several distinct types of tobacco. The taste of the combined tobaccos is further enhanced with age. An example of the aged tobacco is reflected in the fact that the 2006 production, on sale in 2007, was made up of tobacco predominantly from the 1999 crop. The Humidipaks were included in boxes starting in 2002.There is a blue waterdrop sticker on these boxes to indicate this inclusion of a Humidipak.

The smoke is smooth, without any harshness until it gets close to the ribbon. Each example is full of differing flavors through out the smoke. The flavors of the cigars reaches their pinnacle as they are aged longer. Starting from 2005, a second band has been added to indicate the production year. Cigar aficionados can see how long their smokes have been aged from this marking on the band. Once purchased, you may want to age your purchase further. Like fine wines, their taste improves over time. To enjoy it fully, the smoker will need to slowly savor its rich hidden tastes.

Buyers should ascertain they are getting the genuine article. Counterfeit are available on the market to snare the unwary. Fortunately this brand has a complex band not easy to fake. One notable feature is an intricate design towards the bottom has shades of orange, the red, gold, yellow and black intermingling. The sophistication and distinctiveness of the band makes copies easier to distinguish from the authentic article.

A History Buff’s Guide To The Most Unforgettable War Movies Throughout History

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

War movies are unlike any other type of film. They can be scary, fun, intense, uplifting, inspirational and filled with gore all at the same time. What other genre of films can you say that about? Over the years, there have been some absolutely sensational films covering the subject of war.

In my opinion, the following are some of the greatest war movies of all time. Forrest Gump does not count.

I have to include Braveheart on this list. Even though I cannot stand Mel Gibson any longer, I can’t let him get the best of me and ruin this film. It is just too good. An absolute masterpiece and a must see for anyone who likes epic films.

Also starring an actor that may not be my favorite person, but can surely deliver a role as good as anyone, is Russell Crowe as the role of Maximus in Gladiator. This may be Joaquin Phoenix’s best role as well as Commodus. This is an iconic villain if we have ever seen one.

Schindler’s List is probably the most upsetting movie I have ever seen. Spielberg delivers on all accounts with this film that plays out more like a documentary than an original work. If you are looking for a World War II-based film that will change your way of thinking, this is it.

How to pick from the myriad great movies regarding subject matter from the Vietnam War? My personal favorite movie regarding Vietnam is Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. I love everything about this movie, as it gives a terrifying look to the shock and trauma that Vietnam had on many of its soldiers.

When it comes to films about the Civil War, it does not get better than Glory. This film stars Denzel Washington in one of his greatest roles of all time. This is a character building film.

As it stands, these are the movies that I deemed worthy of making the list. A follow up article will be released soon with some other great ones.

Rio De Janerio Becomes First South American City To Host Olympic Games

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite–including President Barack Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey–Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points;

“It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country.”

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath. For the time being, however, the mood in Rio was one of celebration with over 50,000 residents dancing and partying in the streets.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The’96 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.
