A leader of a school group or community group, factory union or an NGO advocating a cause, the leader is always expected to walk the talk and lead by example. This can be very demanding and exhausting for the leader.

Being a leader is not something that you can get trained in or be expected to follow a set pattern but you are expected to meet the expectations of your group or organization and be able to set the path to achieve the expected goals. As a leader you should be able to carry everyone with you and set the rules of the game.

What makes a good leader? What are the qualities required of a leader? Well a leader first of all should have leadership qualities which include ability to set the vision and objectives, lead the team on the action plan, maintain the direction towards reaching the goal, identify roadblocks and remove the hurdles. He should be logical and equipped with reason and critical analytical ability to be able to take informed decisions keeping in view all the factors. Most importantly he should be able to persevere and make progress without loosing his confidence even in times of crises.

As leaders, they are expected to be perfect and correct at all time. There is no margin for errors in their decision-making. But then when you consider the amount of pressure they face and the number of things they handle all at one time, you will realize that they can go wrong some times in their decisions for they are human too.

Making mistakes is ok. But the leader is expected to quickly arrest the damage and make amends. He needs to constantly review the direction in which his group is headed and do a course correction if required and always move forward towards the set goal.

A leader has to have a clear head and ability to take objective decisions keeping the organization’s interest and taking into accounts everybody’s opinion and ideas. He should not get swayed by any one school of thought and be able to steer clear of influences that can undermine his capability of taking right decisions.

A leader essentially has to have conviction and own independent decision making capacity. While he should take into consideration all views and opinions of those around him, end of it he should have the courage to stand by his convictions and take the most difficult decisions. He needs to have and stand by his own opinions and convictions.

A leader is solely responsible for steering the direction for the organization to follow. He is the one person who defines the direction, borders, the dos and don’t for the others to follow. He is the repository of the values, beliefs and competence of the group.

Many leaders would probably pick another job if they could. The pressures of having so many people relying on you, having so many decisions to make, having to always be strong….it has to be a lot. But they know they have a job to do, and somewhere in their minds they believe that they are the best people for that job. That is what makes them leaders.

You have to be a people person if you want to be a leader; leaders can’t just lead themselves. They have to know how to communicate and interact with their subordinates. A king who treats his subjects well will enjoy many years of long and successful reign. A king who doesn’t will shortly find himself walking to the gallows. At least that’s how it was back in the day.

At one time or another, every leader has had a moment of panic where they just didn’t know what to do. Times like this show whether a man is a real leader or not; a leader will take a deep breath and do what he can whilst anyone else would throw in the towel. They have to stay calm and keep an even head. This gives them the ability to make tough decisions under pressure.

A leader must never be anything less than his best before his followers. Subordinates cannot see their leader falter or show uncertainty. When such faults are put on display, it is hard for leaders to sustain their followers’ faith in them. To avoid this, a good leader always save his moments of weakness for his confidants and puts on the brave face at all other times. He must think quickly and always be sure of his actions. Even when he isn’t.

Sometimes life takes us into the morally gray area and it’s next to impossible to know what the right path is. People who can choose a path and live with whatever the consequences may be make strong leaders. They decide what the best course of action is for themselves as well as the people they lead.

A leader should be open to input from all sides, and should judge all input equally, regardless of source. Listening is a powerful skill, and can make a leader all the better. Leaders have to be able to make their own decisions, but that doesn’t mean they can’t listen to other people’s opinions.

Most of all, a leader should back his beliefs up and not quail under the scrutiny of others. Be the best leader you can be and stay firm at all times.

In summary, good leadership skills are about knowing what your choices are, choosing the best option, defending your choice, and believing in yourself even when others don’t. That is what makes a good leader.

They have to be flexible while also being able to defer to a core set of beliefs in order to make decisions when all the best information may not be available to them. They have to be reasonable and analytical one minute while commanding excitement and loyalty the next.

Situations can become quickly complicated and leaders have to be able to contend with these situations even as they change moment by moment. Leaders have to rise to meet these challenges even if they are afraid or don’t have the courage to do so.

Leaders have to focus on the mission to make tough decisions when the situation calls on them to make tough decisions. They can’t be swayed by politicians and cowards into making the decisions that might not be in the best interest of the group or organization.

The very best leaders are open minds and flexible while also maintaining an open door so they can hear out the ideas and complaints of their underlings. They have to listen, but they also have to be steadfast. They need to know and believe in the validity of their position without being swayed every time somebody comes up with a complaint or an altering viewpoint.

Also, leaders have to be opinionated. They have to be able to ascertain their own positions and defend them from outside threats – and sometimes even internal threats. They have to stand by their ideas.

As a leader, you should be strong and decisive but also know when it will benefit you or the group to sway with the tides of opinion or better information. In this way you will be the best leader that you can be.
