Cuba’s political history is as diverse as any previously colonised nation, and post-settlement, the ups and downs of Cuba’s political history has been well recorded right up to the present day. Although originally spotted by Christopher Columbus in 1492, it was Spain who was to colonise this island. The first Spanish settlements began to appear in the early 1500s, with Spain’s control of the island declared in 1514.

The native Cuban’s and their colonisers lived fairly co-operatively for the next couple of hundred years, with the next significant turning point in Cuba’s political history occurring during the African Slave Trade when Britain conquered the capital of Havana as part of the Seven Years’ War, and within a year had introduced thousands of slaves onto the island.

During this time thousands of slaves were introduced to the island, but due to Spain’s restrictive trade laws, Cuba still struggled to compete with international trade. This all changed when, from the early-19th Century, Cuba was able to export their best commodity, sugar, outside the Caribbean. However, as this coincided with the abolition of the slave trade in Cuba, the island’s economy dived due to the higher expense of sugar plantation labour.

The 1800s was also the century of more positive movements such as independence and reform. Cuba focused on abolishing the slave trade which they found repugnant, as well as becoming annexed with the United States of America. Towards the end of the 19th Century, after experiencing 3 small liberation wars, Cuba finally became free from Spanish control in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American war. Immediately after their freedom, Cuba was governed by America until 1902 when control was given back to a Cuban government.

The early to mid-20th Century was a period of significant economical growth in Cuba, which was significantly due to the efforts of capitalist leader, Fulgencio Batista. Batista had to flee Cuba in 1959 due to political pressure, which is when we saw communist leader, Fidel Castro, take control. Straight away, Castro asserted the revolutionary communist authority which remains the same to this day, by making labour unions illegal and arresting moderates. Any political relationship Cuba had with American ended in 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis, where we saw Cuba agree to secretly hide 2 Soviet Union missiles.
