If you have heard of Japanese script called Kanji you have to understand that it has its roots in China. The characters from Chinese symbol are throughout evident in the Japanese script as we find it now in their logographic style of writing. In fact once you translate the Kanji script you will find characters from Chinese Hans symbols.

How come the Kanji script today belongs to Japan if it had its origin in China? The whole thing was the result of the trade followed by the two countries where Japan would import Chinese articles with Hans script labeled on them.

An example of such an article includes the gold seal that was handed over by the then emperor of the Han dynasty to the Japanese. How and when the Japanese began to achieve command over the use of the Chinese characters remains a mystery.

The most believable story is that the first people to make use of the Chinese Kanji script symbols in Japan were actually Chinese immigrants. Otherwise the Japanese had no real means of understanding or comprehending and even learning the Chinese script.

As time passed the China and Japan developed friendly relations in trade and otherwise which required written documents going from one country to the other. In such circumstances it was a necessity that the Chinese language should be understood by Japanese and a board of people called Fuhito was trained to handle the paper work from China. This could be the most plausible reason how Chinese Kanji script landed up in Japan and later evolved.

When Chinese Kanji script came to Japan there was nothing like formal writing system existing in the country. Initially the Japanese started writing with the Chinese script itself but gradually they started developing a script of their own with the aid of the Kanji script which would be compatible with Japanese grammar.

Yet another advancement made was that the Japanese were presently using the Chinese characters to write Japanese words. This is what gave rise to modern kana syllables. The difference was that whereas the Chinese used their characters as symbols that lacked any phonetic value, the Japanese introduced a phonetic value to the Chinese script.

Kanji script though accepted more or less as Japanese is used more frequently in China than in Japan. People also believe that the Kanji script of both the countries look almost the same. In reality the Japanese and Chinese Kanji script has lot of difference as Chinese Kanji symbols are shaped differently.

The reading practices of the Kanji script in both China and Japan are also different. In China this script is treated entirely as symbols and as such has no phonetic value where as in Japan it is read according to their phonetics as we have already discussed.

Chinese kanji symbols have been used in China for thousands of years.

Some still believe that in Belgium during the First World War, some information about civilian atrocities was simply propaganda put out by the British. But in this new book, the authors Lorraine Bateman and Paul Cole review the evidence and take a closer look at how the country’s people reacted in 1914 to occupation by the German army.

The courage of local people comes out when they are faced with the ransacking of their homes, and the destruction of their town (Leuven, which burned for days) and horrific discoveries of mass murders and rape. Vowing to fight against their new rulers rather than submit to their wishes, they help and support British soldiers as they evade capture, risking their own safety in the process.

The lives of three contrasting individuals are drawn together to create the storyline of At Midnight in a Flaming Town: American Rhodes scholar Russell, English nurse Marion and a junior sister from a local convent. These three find their lives linked with Brussels-based Edith Cavell, head of a nursing school and someone destined to emerge as one of the most famous people of WW1. In a world stressed by lack of clarity about the future, the characters weave a web of intrigue, lies and prejudice as they struggle to make sense of their situation.

Authors Bateman and Cole used original accounts to source information that brings life to an urgent, compelling storyline. Don’t miss out, pre-order your copy of At Midnight in a Flaming Town by visiting www.lorrainebateman.com and the author’s personal blog online at www.batemancole.wordpress.com.

The title of the book comes from the poem ‘A Rendezvous with Death’ written by Alan Seeger, an American poet (and who was a contemporary of T.S.Eliot at Harvard). When war broke out Seeger signed up to fight with the French Foreign Legion, and he was killed in action in 1916. His brother, Charles Seeger, was the father of renowned folk singer Pete Seeger.

To say Charlie Chaplin was popular is like the Pacific Ocean is wet.

To say Charlie Chaplin was popular is like the Pacific Ocean is wet.

It is difficult for us to even imagine the immense fame and celebrity he enjoyed in the 1920s and ’30s. Today we know the names of literally thousands of celebrities, personalities, sports stars and news-makers (Why do they call them “stars?” Because there are so many!) But at the dawn of the 20th century, mass media was just being created. Movies were brand new. Baseball was just becoming the national pastime. Radio was just taking its first tentative steps and TV was 50 years away.

Into this world strolled a genius at his art form. Charlie just had an innate understanding of comedy and how to make movies.

Fatty Arbuckle and Mary Pickford were the first major movie stars but Charlie Chaplin soon eclipsed them and everyone else. He literally had no competition. Even today, Arbuckle, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd are well-regarded, but Chaplin is still considered the all-time master at silent movie comedy and silent movies in general.

Unfortunately, Charlie’s leftist politics and less-than-puritan personal life (he had the unfortunate habit of marrying teenagers) finally started to eclipse even his movie fame during the cold-war era. Mixed with the fact that he could never regain his silent-movie fame in the talkies, he finally left America all-together in 1952. At the time he was being accused of being a Communist (untrue) and he had his visa revoked by the American government (he was a British citizen.)

He vowed never to return to the United States, saying “I have no further use for America. I wouldn’t go back there if Jesus Christ was president.”

Well, since Jesus never became president (at least as far as we know) he decided to return during the reign of the “other guy.” In 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon, Charlie made a triumphant return to accept a Lifetime Achievement Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Wales has a long history of music and has been called the ‘land of song’ since at least the Nineteenth Century. This reference to Wales as the land of song, almost certainly comes from the enthusiastic singing in Welsh churches and at Welsh sports meetings, especially at rugby matches. However, Wales’ links with music go much further back than that.

Wales has a tradition of folk music which is closely linked with Scottish and Irish folk music. There are several kinds of musical gathering that are similar to those in other Celtic countries in the United Kingdom. For instance there is the twmpath (folk dance session), g?yl werin (folk festival) and noson lawen (a traditional party similar to the Gaelic “C?ilidh”).

Modern Welsh folk musicians have often resurrected traditions which had been suppressed or forgotten, and have competed with imported and indigenous rock and pop trends. This has been especially true since the 1990’s.

Despite modern Welsh trends in music, Wales will always be connected with Male Voice Choirs such as the Morriston Orpheus Choir and Treorchy Male Voice Choir which enjoy world wide fame.

These choirs were frequently made up of workers from one village or one coal mine and so it was quite natural for men to sing when one town played against another, particularly when that game was Wales’ national sport of rugby. The first time the Welsh National Anthem, ‘Yr Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ (‘The Old Country of my Fathers’, usually translated as ‘Land of My Fathers’), was sung at an International sporting event was in 1905

Along side the choirs, brass bands developed in villages, working men’s clubs, churches and at work particularly in South Wales where brass bands are still very popular. In fact, the Cory Band is one of the most best brass bands in the world.

There were more than a few world renowned Welsh singers in the Twentieth Century and some of them are still singing to jam-packed audiences worldwide. Ivor Novello was one of the first who became famous during the First World War as a singer songwriter. Then there was Geraint Evans and Delme Bryn-Jones in the Second World War.

After that, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey began their singing careers in the 1950’s and are still singing fifty years later. There were also popular bands during the Seventies and Eighties such as Man and Budgie and solo singers such as Shakin’ Stevens, nnie Tyler and John Cale (Velvet Underground).

In more recent times, we have seen the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci; the latter two bands being notable for lots of their songs’ words being in Welsh.

There have always been operatic singers as well such as Rebecca Evans, Aled Jones, Bryn Tervel and Charlotte Church. Cardiff hosts the ‘Singer of the World’ competition and the Wales also has its very own Eisteddfod, where Pavarotti sang for years. It was because of Wales tradition as a nation of singers that Paul Robeson sang in Wales in the Fifties

St. Louis has many claims to fame. From hosting World’s Fairs and Olympic Games to its fabulous and unique Gateway Arch, this city by the Mississippi has much to offer. For those who enjoy soaking up history, St. Louis provides a myriad of exciting experiences just waiting to be discovered.

The Missouri History Museum is an excellent beginning point for your historic outings. Exhibits include local aviation history as well as homage to famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. One section includes highlights from the 1904 World’s Fair. Another exhibit explores the city’s beginnings as a French trading post.

For centuries prior to European expansion, the St. Louis area was home to a huge population of Native Americans. A visit to nearby Cahokia Mounds and travelers will find the remains of a city that once rivaled the size of many great cities of the world. This National Historic Landmark and World Heritage Site is the largest pre-Colombian Native American site north of Mexico.

Another fun historic adventure is a trip to Faust Park. The park includes the Thornhill Historic Site, which is the preserved estate of the second governor of Missouri. In addition to exploring his mansion, outbuildings and family cemetery, the park also features an impressive historic village. The village includes a variety of different historic homes as well as barns and a schoolhouse.

There are many more historic attractions, including tours of Daniel Boone’s home. The Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site and Scott Joplin State Historic Site are a few more options available.

When you book your St. Louis stay, keep the historic theme going and enjoy a few days at the historic, 19th-century Fleur-de-Lys Mansion. This upscale Missouri bed and breakfast is located in a posh St. Louis’s historic district and includes four romantic guest rooms.

The luxurious rooms at this St. Louis inn include featherbeds topped with 600-thread count lavender rinsed cotton sateen sheets and down comforters. Each of the en suite baths is stocked with L’Occitane bath products and includes special amenities such as towel warmers. Some guest baths also offer a Jacuzzi tub.

In addition to all the grandeur of this St. Louis inn and its guest rooms, guests are also treated to a full, gourmet breakfast each morning, featuring specialties such as baked eggs with brie cheese, bananas Foster French Toast or perhaps ricotta cheese and blueberry crepes.

Jane Leisteiner is a frequent traveler and is fond of blogging about her travels.

Cuba’s political history is as diverse as any previously colonised nation, and post-settlement, the ups and downs of Cuba’s political history has been well recorded right up to the present day. Although originally spotted by Christopher Columbus in 1492, it was Spain who was to colonise this island. The first Spanish settlements began to appear in the early 1500s, with Spain’s control of the island declared in 1514.

The native Cuban’s and their colonisers lived fairly co-operatively for the next couple of hundred years, with the next significant turning point in Cuba’s political history occurring during the African Slave Trade when Britain conquered the capital of Havana as part of the Seven Years’ War, and within a year had introduced thousands of slaves onto the island.

During this time thousands of slaves were introduced to the island, but due to Spain’s restrictive trade laws, Cuba still struggled to compete with international trade. This all changed when, from the early-19th Century, Cuba was able to export their best commodity, sugar, outside the Caribbean. However, as this coincided with the abolition of the slave trade in Cuba, the island’s economy dived due to the higher expense of sugar plantation labour.

The 1800s was also the century of more positive movements such as independence and reform. Cuba focused on abolishing the slave trade which they found repugnant, as well as becoming annexed with the United States of America. Towards the end of the 19th Century, after experiencing 3 small liberation wars, Cuba finally became free from Spanish control in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American war. Immediately after their freedom, Cuba was governed by America until 1902 when control was given back to a Cuban government.

The early to mid-20th Century was a period of significant economical growth in Cuba, which was significantly due to the efforts of capitalist leader, Fulgencio Batista. Batista had to flee Cuba in 1959 due to political pressure, which is when we saw communist leader, Fidel Castro, take control. Straight away, Castro asserted the revolutionary communist authority which remains the same to this day, by making labour unions illegal and arresting moderates. Any political relationship Cuba had with American ended in 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis, where we saw Cuba agree to secretly hide 2 Soviet Union missiles. America responded by making any travel, trade or financial transactions between the two illegal, and these restrictions also remain the same to this day.

Now you know the political history, you should go and see the place first hand by searching for cheap holidays to Cuba

The grenade is one proof that a destructive weapon need not be excessively big. The hand grenade will always be one of the main guns of conflict with huge destructive power. These firearms are lethal against humans and destructive against defenses. A hand grenade is utilized to reduce an opponent’s line of defense as well as to cut off pursuit. The grenade resembles the berry of the pomegranate, from which it was named. But the shape is not the only thing that a grenade has in typical with the plant. Perhaps it is also the fact that the berry of this tree explodes when ripe that made early innovators name the tool after it.

Grenades are clipped on infantrymen ‘ belts, or straps. An ordinary soldier carries one or two of these units. A pin keeps the device secure, and the device will only blow off after explosion. A soldier needs to manually remove the pin to discharge the grenade. Some troopers employ this only when they run out of firearms, or when the state of affairs calls for it.

The blast from one single unit of hand grenade is impossible to ignore. The deadly factors are the sharp objects hidden inside the hand grenade.

Vehicles are often destroyed by one hand grenade unit. Enemy soldiers camp out along roads just to be able to wreck the heavily fortified supply trucks. Only the most sturdy combat automobiles are able to resist a direct attack using hand grenades.

Early hand grenades are bulky, but the concept of hiding projectiles inside the casing has been preserved in modern counterparts. The first ever grenades were made of ceramic or metal and jam-packed with firearm powder. Besides the design of the hand grenade, the mode by which it is discharged changed little over time. The gadget needs to be hauled above a certain expanse to land on the adversary’s protective structures. But now, modern hand grenades are thrown using launchers.

A hand grenade launcher is a weapon that throws a grenade more accurately than a human being. This is especially helpful when the goal is to scatter an army from afar. Grenade launchers look like firearms, but some are mounted on trucks.

Public records generally are supposed to be obtained at no cost to the members of public except under very unique circumstances, and they should no way be restricted. We are talking about the kind of records that carry personal and private data that is in the public domain either through the various government processes and transactions or have been volunteered to the government by people.

Such data are usually recorded by certain government agencies at all levels of operation like at county, local, state or national and federal levels. They are for public use and therefore are not supposed to be bought or sourced at a fee.

When in need of a public record, you only have to visit a designated government department or office to make a request for it. You will be asked to wait while it is located for you and once this is done, they will call you to come and get it. Normally it is possible to find some offices asking for token payment since there are costs of stamps and other technical expenditure.

If you are still frowning and wondering why some online sites levy charges on these records, yet all public records are supposed to be free, wait a minute. What is important for you to note is that some websites do this for various reasons.

Some companies will ask for a fee because they were also required to purchase the documents from the government agencies.

Whereas others do not ask you to pay for the document, they still need to charge a fee for the services they render to you for them to be able to maintain and operate the usually complex database they keep to enable you get such information promptly, efficiently and conveniently.

Those who find it impossible to pay for such records should not despair for it is still possible to get them on free online site. The best way to go about this is to look for the major online search engines like “public record access free sites.”

Also, there are some sites that will give links to government agencies which publish their public records online. Apart from them, there are also some websites which maintain their databank of free public records on the internet. The only problem is that their database might not be as large as those maintained at a fee.

This author also often gives advice on topics like combination padlock and laptop power adapter.
