Stained Glass: A History

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

No one actually knows when stained glass was first invented because it occurred before people started recording history. However, some historians reckon that it was first used as an extravagance in the homes of affluent Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was finally acclaimed as an art form in the fourth century as Christians started to worship candidly and to build intricate churches in which to observe their religion.

On the other hand, some historians show that there are remnants in ancient ruins that imply that pagans used stained glass in their ceremonies. Although we will most likely never really learn the origins of stained glass, it is pretty certain that the proliferation of Christianity is immediately related to the spread of use of stained glass.

The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an essential element in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the pioneering style of the St. Denis, France, where stained glass windows were used to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Sadly, most of the stained glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some complete windows on exhibit in Europe.

Gothic style stained glass was composed of strong lines, but these increasingly went out of style as the Renaissance began. During the Renaissance, artisans showed greater detail and more delicate colouring in order to add to the realism. Stained glass windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural features and some of the notable features such as lead lines vanished. Because of the problems in showing the great detail essential to the Renaissance era, the old style, which was true stained glass almost died out.

Since stained glass was used mostly by the Catholic Church, much of the work was destroyed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his break with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were destroyed, but many of the glass making works were destroyed too. However, religious turmoil was not the only cause of the wane of stained glass.

The fashion of the Baroque era was for more detailed murals, which meant the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were allowed to fall into disrepair, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were produced. In the late 17th century, the public mood returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed fascination in stained glass windows.

Artisans continued to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to imitate the old leaden frames of medieval times. However, since the original techniques had not been used for such a long time, they had become forgotten and the artisans of the period were unable to recreate the exact styles prevailing in Gothic stained glass.

In the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new variations of stained glass. La Farge tended towards window designs, while Tiffany went into new areas like the Tiffany lamp shade.

Nowadays, stained glass artists are not limited by religious doctrines, although much of the work they do involves restoration. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

How You Can Use Numbers To Gain Support For A Political Issue

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

As far back children we are taught to avoid two subjects in polite conversation politics and religion.

The topics are considered taboo by some because people hold such strong opinions about them. So, in order to keep the peace, we are told to avoid talking about them in public. It is considered the polite thing to do.

Wars are still being fought over the subjects. Many people aren’t open to new ideas. They believe their views on religion and/or politics is the correct one.

Some people feel comfortable with their opinions and are threatened by opposing ideas. They shut out new ideas to protect themselves. Other ideas are not considered or considered and quickly rejected.

In political circles, conversations about hot button subjects are often shelved after lengthy, heated debates that don’t go anywhere. Occasionally, the two sides can find common ground on some issues.

Political settings can bring together people who feel vehemently about their side of an issue. They are so motivated by their beliefs that they are unlikely to see the other side of the issue.

Many people believe the only way to truly find a solution in the political world is to try to stack the votes in their favor. In American politics every citizen can effect change simply by voting. They can vote for politicians that they believe will accurately represent their views. They can also show their support with contributions and volunteering during campaigns.

Finding enough supporters for your position will enable you to influence politicians to pass legislation that will further your agenda. This can be done with a lot of time, effort and devotion to your cause.

Appreciating The Character Of A Great Leader

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

A leader of a school group or community group, factory union or an NGO advocating a cause, the leader is always expected to walk the talk and lead by example. This can be very demanding and exhausting for the leader.

Being a leader is not something that you can get trained in or be expected to follow a set pattern but you are expected to meet the expectations of your group or organization and be able to set the path to achieve the expected goals. As a leader you should be able to carry everyone with you and set the rules of the game.

What makes a good leader? What are the qualities required of a leader? Well a leader first of all should have leadership qualities which include ability to set the vision and objectives, lead the team on the action plan, maintain the direction towards reaching the goal, identify roadblocks and remove the hurdles. He should be logical and equipped with reason and critical analytical ability to be able to take informed decisions keeping in view all the factors. Most importantly he should be able to persevere and make progress without loosing his confidence even in times of crises.

As leaders, they are expected to be perfect and correct at all time. There is no margin for errors in their decision-making. But then when you consider the amount of pressure they face and the number of things they handle all at one time, you will realize that they can go wrong some times in their decisions for they are human too.

Making mistakes is ok. But the leader is expected to quickly arrest the damage and make amends. He needs to constantly review the direction in which his group is headed and do a course correction if required and always move forward towards the set goal.

A leader has to have a clear head and ability to take objective decisions keeping the organization’s interest and taking into accounts everybody’s opinion and ideas. He should not get swayed by any one school of thought and be able to steer clear of influences that can undermine his capability of taking right decisions.

A leader essentially has to have conviction and own independent decision making capacity. While he should take into consideration all views and opinions of those around him, end of it he should have the courage to stand by his convictions and take the most difficult decisions. He needs to have and stand by his own opinions and convictions.

A leader is solely responsible for steering the direction for the organization to follow. He is the one person who defines the direction, borders, the dos and don’t for the others to follow. He is the repository of the values, beliefs and competence of the group.

Crystal Corporate Gifts

Friday, September 24th, 2010

It can be very difficult to find beautiful and unforgettable corporate gifts. Many corporate gifts are just junk, especially the less expensive ones. However, there is a class of gift that is always treasured and can be thought of as useful too.

Have you always presented a calendar or a letter opener? Or a key ring, just like every other company does? Or a bottle of wine that is forgotten the day after it was opened? Well, there is hope yet. What about glass crystal? Everybody loves lead crystal, do they not?

Lead crystal items really are the bees’ knees of gifts, corporate gifts or not. People always need ashtrays, paper weights, and pen holders and made in lead crystal they look expensive and stylish adding to the image of your business.

Lead crystal items are available in many varieties. They make fruit bowls, vases, glasses, paper weights, pen trays, ashtrays, picture frames and carriage clocks along with a dozen other items. When choosing a lead crystal corporate gift, you might like to bear the following things in mind:

If you are presenting these corporate gifts to your staff, you may like to differentiate between your employees or give everyone the same gift. You can distinguish on grounds of sex, length of service, marital status or input to the company’s profits. There again, you may know the longest serving personnel very well and want to get them something that will suit them personally. You can do this in terms of cost or style or both.

For instance, office staff might like a lead crystal paperweight, pen-holder or picture frame. Blue collar workers may rather a lead crystal vase or bowl. Single people might play golf or sail and like an item engraved with a golfing or sailing motif. Married people might like a picture frame or a vase. Long-serving personnel or high-earners might appreciate a carriage clock.

Cost is obviously an important issue, but often corporate gifts are tax-deducible and glass crystal items differ greatly in price depending on the manufacturer. For example, you can get a nice lead crystal goblet set for $15, but if you want to give Waterford lead crystal, you can expect to pay three times as much.

Are you presenting these corporate gifts to clients or / and prospective clients? In this case, you will have to have them engraved with your firm’s contact details. You will also want the corporate gift to remain in the client’s office, so it should be office orientated, not home orientated. Something like a heavy paperweight shaped like a rock or a desk tidy fashioned like a boat.

This is the best kind of promotion after word-of-mouth and sign-written vehicles and should be taken seriously by any company that must have clients. Giving a well-thought of gift like lead crystal is a way of enhancing your reputation and that of the beneficiary.

The only other thing to keep in mind is that corporate gifts in lead crystal are precious and need to be handled with care, so if you are having them engraved, which you have to do, then you will need to know how long it will take to get your consignment done and delivered.

California And The Gold Rush

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

In January 1848, James Marshall was overseeing the building of a saw mill for his boss, when he noticed an odd rock glinting in the upturned earth.

He was not sure whether it was gold or not and did not want to get people’s aspirations up. So Marshall attempted to break the yellow rock with a hammer. It did not crack, but it did dent. just like gold would. The woman who was cooking meals for the saw mill construction crew, tried another test by boiling the rock in lye.

They boiled it all day, but it did not change colour. So, they passed the rock over to the mill’s owner, Mr. John Sutter, who also conducted a few tests. Eventually, everyone agreed that this rock was indeed gold.

It seems that the Sierra Nevada Mountains hid huge hordes of gold, but that over tens of thousands of years, erosion had loosened up gold nuggets and the mountain streams flushed them down to the bottom of the mountains. Sutter’s property was situated between two rivers and so was likely to generate great wealth.

Sutter had plans to build an agricultural empire on his 39,000 acres of land, so he asked his employees to keep stum about the strike. However, as is to be anticipated, word leaked out. Eventually news of the gold strike reached the small town of San Francisco.

There, a newspaper publisher shouted around the streets: “Gold from the American River!” and within three days of the news arriving, 400 of the 600 inhabitants had set out for Sutter’s land. It was a groundswell and by the end of the year, gold prospectors had traveled to California from as far afield as Mexico and Chile.

When word of the gold strike reached the east coast, President Polk confirmed the discovery. It was December 1848 and ‘The Gold Rush’ became a national and even a global phenomenon. The gold prospectors of 1849 and later years became known as forty-niners.

What has to be remembered is though, that most people, who came from Canada, Mexico and the eastern United States came by wagon train, as there were not locomotive! This meant a treacherous trek of between six and nine months

Nonetheless, at least 32,000 people actually walked to California in 1849, and about 44,000 more got there in 1850. Others, such as South Americans, faced an awful journey by sea. They underwent storms, shipwrecks, hunger and thirst, disease, and overcrowding and after all that, some still had to undergo mule rides through jungles and deserts! In spite of everything, in under a year, about 40,000 people arrived in San Francisco from overseas.

The new arrivals constituted a dramatic change in California’s population, because in 1848, California had had about 100,000 residents, most of whom were Native Americans, but within two years, the state populace more than doubled but the variety of ethnicity increased tens of times.

Some prospectors found gold and made a fortune in the Californian riverbeds, but most people did not become rich in the Gold Rush. When gold was found, the cache was usually cleared quickly. James Marshall had little achievement as a miner, and he died impoverished. John Sutter, who had once owned 39,000 acres, left California in serious debt after miners flattened his land.

In deed, it was easier to make money selling shovels and other provisions to the miners. Most people lost everything they had, so they stayed to work the vast expanse called California or to set up businesses. By 1856, San Francisco had a very multi-ethnic population of over 50,000 people and California had become the most exciting state in the country.

Investing In Gold – The Basics

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

A very diversified investment portfolio has a small space for a position in gold. Some people think that investing in gold means holding gold coins, usually South African Kruger Rands, which are one troy ounce in weight. Other speculators purchase gold futures on the commodity exchange.

However, futures contracts are tremendously precarious because you are betting that the price of gold will rise or fall in the future. The contract itself requires a relatively small up front payment, but you will have to put up guarantees called margin to take care of daily changes in price.

The reason investors are interested in gold at the moment is because often in the past, when the stock market is down, the gold market is up. Weakness in the dollar frequently brings a surge in the price of gold too.

Another route to investing in gold is through bonds and precious metal funds, which can be bought through a stock broker. However, you will need to select your stockbroker very cautiously, because this area of investing requires highly specialized knowledge.

The following suggestions are meant as examples only as you will want up-to-the-minute information, if you are thinking about investing in stocks, shares and funds. One of the names that will come up in any investigation is Agnico-Eagle Mines, which trades on the NYSE and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker AEM. They have 30+ year history in the mining of gold and In that time, they have produced 4,000,000+ ounces of gold.

Gold has made huge profits for investors in gold since the late 1970’s. However, the secret to making money from gold is knowledge of the different resistance points in the price and the evaluation of the worldwide market for the use of gold. It is used principally in jewellery and electronics and some other types of manufacturing.

The biggest markets for gold jewellery is India and other Eastern countries. China’s new-found prosperity is also having an effect on the markets, although manufacturing is still of prime importance there.

You will have to have a good stockbroker or consultant, because the gold market is so complex. If you are investing in gold as a hedge against a vulnerable dollar, you are taking huge risks and you will have to to look for any strengthening in the dollar like a hawk. A fairly shrewd tactic is to set yourself reasonable goals. For instance, are you content with a 10% profit or are you going to hang out for a 25% gain?

Gold can be affected by seasonal events. Check out when people in India get married. It is seasonal and around Christmas time. Then St. Valentine’s Day is a realistic influence too, but you or your adviser will have to examine the trends and the graphs.

You can get into gold mining stocks for fairly small money, but it is not the cost of the share certificate that is important, it is the yield on those shares. Be on your guard with small mining companies, because the expenses of exploration are ruinous. Likewise, profits on hitting a big seam would be wonderful for a small company.

Some Topics You Should Be Very Cautious About Raising Up

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Are you going out on your first date? Enjoy yourself. But then watch out so that you do not broach any unwanted or irrelevant subject that is a killjoy. Here are a few tips to help you stick to the right side of the conversation.

While on your outing, just enjoy the experience and use this opportunity to get to know the other person better. How you do this is by listening to the other person and talking only when required .

A conversation is not one sided. The other person would also be asking you questions about yourself. Do respond and talk about your self when asked and keep the conversation going. You should not be absent minded or somewhere lost in thought.

One doesn’t talk about topics like politics or crime on your first date. This is not done.

Of course you can talk about politics or any other subject if it so happens that both of you share the same common interest and then it helps you interact better and the conversation flows.

You will find that the conversation gets argumentative if both of you have diverse opinion while discussing politics. In such cases, the best would be to stop the conversation and change the subject.

Religion is something that people are very sensitive about and it is very personal to each individual. This is the second subject that you should avoid discussing on your first date.

Religion is a serious matter. Unless both of you know each other’s opinions and hold the same beliefs about this subject, it does not help to bring up this topic on your first date.

In case you do end up talking, it could get into an argument and build divides. Instead of spoiling your date, keep this discussion for the future until you get to know the other person better.

Will These Wine Glasses Do?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The growing trend of popularity of wine has led to a boom in things to go with wine like corkscrews, stoppers, coolers, napkins, pouring baskets, decanters, candles, thermometers, bottle jackets, hydrometers and dozens of variations of each accessory from electric versions to manual ones. Needless to say, a lot of these accessories will be used until the novelty wears off and then left at the back of the cupboard.

However, there is one category of wine drinking accessory that no wine drinker should be without and that is wine glasses. They are essential, I am sure that everyone would agree. But the good thing about wine glasses is that they are attractive when they are not in use too. A set of six lead crystal wine glasses is a fine-looking sight. And a fine set of glasses correctly shaped for the wine you are drinking will greatly enhance your enjoyment of that wine.

This is because the shape of the glass is very influential on the drinker’s ability to savour the taste and the aroma of wine. Therefore, it is essential to use the correct glasses for the type of wine being served.

Red wines benefit a lot from contact with air, so, aside from opening the bottle an hour before drinking it, you could decant it. The older and heavier the wine, the more air it needs. The next step is to serve the red wine in large glasses. This is not so as to be able to get as much wine in there as possible! A full, normal size bottle contains six servings no matter what glass you use, but a large glass allows you to swirl the wine around the glass, thereby increasing its contact with air.

A large tulip shaped glass is a good example of this kind of wine glass and any dark red wine would benefit from being drunk out of such a vessel. Try a Rioja or Bordeaux, for instance.

White wines, on the other hand, do not need to breathe for as long as red wines and are best served slightly chilled. Therefore, the wine glasses tend to have a smaller bowl and a longer stem. The bowl is smaller, because swirling is not essential and the stem is longer, so that the warmth from your hand does not warm the wine up prematurely. Try a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon or a German wine in these glasses.

Champagne glasses are called champagne flutes because the bowl is long and narrow, which allows the bubbles to float through more of the wine than if the bowl were short. This is beneficial for the wine, the taste and its appearance. The stem is also long as with other white wines to diminish heat transfer.

The last main kind of glass is the sherry schooner, which is also used for port. Sherry and port are both heavy reds and so need to breathe, which is one of the reasons why they ought to be decanted. However, a schooner has hardly any stem, because the warmth from your hand is required to keep the wine at the right temperature.

Besides the shape of the bowl and the length of the stem, the next most significant factor is the quality of the glass and its design. Some people like hand-blown glass and it can be very beautiful, but it also tends to be light and fragile. I prefer to use lead crystal glasses, which are a lot heavier and can take a deeper pattern.

Black Hills Rings? What Are They?

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Most people have aspirations for the future. Some people plan out their lives in elaborate detail from an early age, while others just dream that their dreams will come true. I think that that depends on the philosophy of life you have as much as your personality. I certainly remember when I was a boy, that some of the girls I knew when I was a boy, planning what they would do when they got married to so and so film star.

They did not know much about marriage or what being married was like, they were just role playing, but some of those desires might have stuck.

None of the boys I knew thought about their future much at all. I did not either really although I knew that I wanted to go to university and travel after that. I studied French and German for three years and passed my exams.

After finishing university, I began working for an international firm and did some traveling. I have always liked jewellery although I do not wear a lot at the same time. I suppose I collect jewellery, but I like to wear it as well.

It was a custom of mine to buy a piece of jewellery wherever I went, if I saw something I liked and if I could afford it. Anyway, I met a young woman while I was in America and I told her about my craze for collecting jewellery and rings in particular. I showed her a couple of rings that I had taken with me. One was a ring with a Celtic Knot design and another was an Irish Claddagh ring.

Anyway, we got on well and so she offered to take me to a jewellers that she knew. We went to a small back street jeweller, who had a choice of rings I had never heard of before. They were called Black Hills Gold Rings and they looked very distinctive. They have quite a range, including a lot of the common designs, but they also have a few kinds that I had never seen before. I was hooked and wanted one.

My friend really fell for a women’s wedding set. She had seen it in the window for months, but did not have anyone to give it to her. The engagement ring had two leaves and a grape cluster with a small diamond nestled in the middle of it, while the wedding band had two additional leaves and a grape cluster. This meant that when worn together, the two rings would fit together to surround the diamond completely. It was really very nice.

I had to grant that it was very beautiful, but felt it necessary to point out that I had not known her long enough to propose. She was a good sort and did not feel affronted. I bought a beautiful white gold ring with the Black Hills gold roses inlaid on the top two thirds of the band, leaving the bottom of the ring plain. It was a lovely addition to my collection. As for my guide, well, she did not get a ring, but I took her for an expensive meal and she seemed happy enough with that.

Ideas To Run A Great Electoral Campaign

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

When proposing to run for political office or any other type of election you may think that the first place that you should start would be researching past elections or even trying to compile a list of donors to your campaign.

This however is not the best place to start. There is one more far important place to start any campaign and that would be to look at your family.

No matter how big or how small the office is that you are running for you can guarantee that the biggest supporters that you will have will be your own family.

Whenever you run for any office or run any campaign there is going to be a lot of stress involved with it. This will impact directly on your family especially when you are running to tight schedules.

So if you do have the notion of running for office it could be a good idea to discuss it with your spouse. If she has no problems with it and gives you her full support then that is your first battle won in your campaign.

The next step would be to involve your children if they are old enough to be able to understand what is going on. Make them aware that there will be sacrifices and ask their opinions.

As well as the stress that comes with the election and all its planning there will also be a different kind of stress should you win. Most of the local office positions may be only part time jobs but you will still have to dedicate a lot of your time in order to do your job effectively.

But there is one thing that you must always remember and that is no matter how important you feel the position of office is there is always something more important and that is your family. If you can combine your position in office with that of a family man then you will have the best of both worlds.
