Sensitive Issues That Should Be Handled Carefully When Starting A Conversation On A First Date

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Of course you want to be on your best behavior on a first date. As part of making the best early impressions possible, you will want to avoid certain sensitive topics that can cause trouble. Be careful with the following topics:

Yourself – Don’t talk about yourself too much. You can come across as boring and egotistical. Instead, focus more on the other person. Asking them questions helps.

On the other hand, if your date asks you questions about yourself, don’t deflect. Answer honestly, then ask them the same question or something else about them. This makes the conversation balanced, and makes sure each person has time to talk about themselves. No one should dominate the conversation.

Politics – Just don’t talk politics on a first date. Talking politics any time is risky enough, but on a first date it is particularly unwise.

Sometimes you’ll be talking and just stumble over politics, and find that you and the other person see eye to eye politically. If this is the case, great! You can continue to talk along this line if you want, to keep up the conversation.

But, if you drift into a political conversation and it turns out that you and the other person have different beliefs, don’t continue. Get to know each other a bit before dealing with political issues.

Religion – Talking religion is much like talking politics, there is a big risk for offending people. It’s best not to talk about religion on a first date.

The only exception to this rule is in the case where you know ahead of time that you and your date agree on all religious matters; this can be the case where people who are very religious meet through a religious group or on a religious dating site. If this is the case, talk about religion may be appropriate.

Talking religion is a bad idea because if you disagree about religion, it can be a sticking point. Better to get to know each other a bit, and have a basis for a relationship, before starting a religious discussion with a potential partner.

Topic number one: yourself. While it is a good idea to talk about yourself to some extent, do not dominate the conversation with little details that release don’t matter anyway. It makes you look bad and gives off the impression that you don’t even want to find out anything about the other person.

Now, of course, if you are asked a question concerning yourself, don’t be shifty and change the subject. Answer the question and then ask one of your own. This keeps the conversation flowing and prevents awkward pauses.

In most social situations, politics should be a topic handled with care and be: it can lead to heated arguments. The safest thing you could do would be to avoid the subject altogether.

If you find yourself on the subject and is going well, use your own judgment and discuss it to the point that you are comfortable. But, most likely, the topic will go badly. In such a situation, try to change the subject as smoothly as possible.

If you get the feeling that the two of you have differing views on politics, be sure to put off that conversation for a while.

The topic of religion tends to have the same rules as talking about politics. It generally isn’t something you want to discuss on a first date.

Unless you are both devout Christians or Muslims or some other religion and you know that you share the same opinion, quarantine the subject. Such heavy topics really shouldn’t be discussed on first dates anyway.

Differing religious views can make a date go downhill. Unless is extremely important for you to know someone’s religious viewpoints before getting involved with them, steer clear of this hazardous subject and save it for a later date.
