Everything Important About The Georgia Labor Commissioner
The Peach State’s most senior executive in charge statewide employment issues is the Georgia Labor Commissioner. The Commissioner and his Department manage all of Georgia and the United States governments’ rules related to work, places of work, training for work, and disabled workers. Corporations, companies, and employees look to the Department of Labor for direction and information on policies, rules, and laws in this area. Generally, leaders in these roles focus their efforts on activities to improve the competencies and abilities of employees. Skilled workers can improve the economy by working more efficiently and effectively.
The Commissioner heads-up a large, multifaceted organization. While his principal office is located in Atlanta, the agency has over 4,000 employees working throughout the state’s 159 counties. The work of Georgia’s Labor Department is carried out in communities through three different kinds of offices. There are one-stop centers for the teaching and learning of workers (45 centers in total); rehabilitative programs for disabled workers (50 offices statewide); and specialized offices for the unemployed to help find jobs (there are 53 such offices).
The federal government also has a labor department. The Labor Commissioner interfaces with the federal agency, particularly serving as the point of contact for the US Wage and Hour Division and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
One of the principal services the Department provides is statewide coordination of unemployment benefit provision. In response to the Great Recession, demand for these services is at an all-time high. In addition, the State provides extensive information for those people looking for work. All of these initiatives aim to address the high unemployment rate, which has been at about 10 percent.
The agency provides in depth analysis and reporting on employment statistics through its Workforce Information and Analysis unit. The unit provides outlook documents on the long- and short-term prospects for growth in various industries, information on worker training and development, and other reports to help workforce-planning professionals.
One important role that the Georgian agency and all such agencies play is in promoting safe and healthy work environments. Georgia’s department provides a number of such services. They have extensive information on regulations related to ensuring safety in a number of specialized industries, such as HVAC, chemicals, amusements, and bungee jumping. The agency also plays an important role in coordinating a statewide group that provides voluntary consultation services to small, mid-size, and large business looking to improve their safety. One such partnership sends Georgia Tech experts to a business to assist in improving workplace safety.
In Georgia, the office is elected statewide. The candidates appear on the ballot with the gubernatorial, lieutenant gubernatorial, attorney general, and secretary of state candidates. Additionally, there are additional state executives who have oversight over priority areas of statewide concern, including the Insurance Commissioner and the Agriculture Commissioner. Democrat Michael Thurmond presently serves as the Georgia Labor Commissioner. His first time winning election to the office was 1998.
